The various stages in medieval cathedral building. Work ordinarily begins on the east end which is consecrated and often used long before the church is finished. Here work progresses on the transepts and nave, constructed with brick and faced with stone. Other churches are nearly done, with the exception of the steeples, the last part to be built.
